Before you make a choice there are a few bed linen basics you should understand. Most bed linen is cotton or a mix of cotton and polyester. The cotton and polyester mixes are usually the lowest in price. Luxury bed linen in various designs and fabrics will cost more.
Bedding Fabrics
The polyester in a fabric makes for easier ironing. But don't ignore modern cottons. Cottons can now be made in an "easy care" process which also allows it to be ironed with ease.
Egyptian cotton and Pima cotton are the fabrics of choice in luxury bedding. Yes, linen of Egyptian or Pima cotton will be more expensive, but it will give you a velvet-like softness not available in most other types of bedding. Many fine bed linens are created from these fabrics.
Linen Thread Count
What about thread count? That's easy, the higher the thread count the softer the cotton. A good example is Sateen cotton. Sateen has a high tread count and is silky smooth.

Thread count is defined as the number of horizontal and vertical threads in one square inch of fabric. The greater number of threads per square inch, the smoother and softer the fabric.
Thread counts run as low as 80 and as high as 1000. Just remember that the higher the thread count the softer the linen... and the more expensive it will be. It's a good idea to avoid linen with thread counts less than 200 to 250.
Designer bed linen is often found in high thread count fabrics.
Wait! There is an exception to that low thread count warning. Some sheet fabrics such as linen flannel and jersey have low thread counts, because they simply have thicker fibers. Those who snuggle between warm and cozy flannel sheets on a cold winter's night are not going to be counting threads.
Fabric Weave
Another consideration is "weave". The weave is the way the individual fibers of the fabric have been woven or twisted together. For example, if the fibers have been twisted together very tightly the result will be a sturdy fabric. If the fibers were twisted together loosely you will have a low cost low endurance fabric. You can see that the weave of a fabric will plays a roll in durability and feel of bed sheets.
Generally bed sheets come in two fabric types; natural and synthetic. Natural fabrics are cotton, silk, linen and wool. The synthetic fabrics include nylon and polyester. As a rule, natural fabrics are the ones people find the most comfortable. Synthetic fabrics are perfectly acceptable and are often less expensive.
Fabrics and their Characteristics:
Cotton: Comfort, durability, breathable
Egyptian Cotton: high quality, softness, smoothness
Pima Cotton: Soft and smooth to touch
Cotton-Polyester: Durable, wrinkle less, easy to iron
Silk: Luxury! It's value is measure on it's "momme weight". The higher the momme weight the better the quality of the silk. An average silk sheet would weigh between 10-12 momme.
